During November 16-17th, 2016, the workshop of "Sustainable Systems and Societies: energy, environment and policy frameworks”, supported by Sao Paulo Research Foundation and hosted by our sister school Universidade Estadual de Campinas, successfully held in Brazil.More than 50 scholars from Zhejiang University, Stellenbosch University, Universidade Estadual de Campinas and University of Bath attended the meeting and visited Brazil National Laboratory for bioethanol research.Under the support of the project “Double top-class University” and the project “Cooperation with the key universities in BRICs”, Dean Luo Zhongyang led a 13-member delegation ofteachers and students from Scientific Research Institute, College of Energy Engineering and College of Environmental Resources to Brazil to participate in the international seminar.
At the meeting, Dean Luo Zhongyang introduced in detail the development of Zhejiang University, the advantages of disciplines and developments in the field of energy and environment.Professor Zhou Jinsong and Professor Cheng Jun respectively introduced the research achievements onproduction of high quality liquid fuel by biomass pyrolysis and preparation of biodiesel by means of microalgae fixed coal fired flue gas;Professor Yu Zitao introduced the concept of smart city energy network and its applications;
Professor Wang Ke and Professor Zheng Ping respectively introduced the sustainable development of the urban environment and the analysis of big data in the construction of major infrastructure and the hot issues of environmental pollution and control in China. One post-doctoral students and five doctoral students reported their research topics in the field of energy and environment separately. The wonderful reports of the delegation of Zhejiang University aroused heated discussions and in-depth communications among the participants.
Representatives from the four universities lively discussed the further strengthening cooperation mechanism in the aspects of joint training of students, academic exchanges, and joint research and so on, and carried out a consultation on personnel exchanges and the hosting affairs of the next U4C meeting.
The meeting discussed the normalization and sustainability of theQuartet cooperation mechanism, strengthened the academic linkage with the national key universities of the BRICs. We look forward the higher education cooperation among BRIC countries will further strengthenthe status and the voices of collaborating teams in the international community.
