On October 10, Prof. Carman Gregory Paul from Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering in the University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) and Prof. Derek S. W. Or from the Department of Electrical Engineering in Hong Kong Polytechnic University visited our department. Prof. Carman made an academic report entitled “Thermal Magnetic Energy Harvesting” in the big meeting room of Li Da San building. Prof. Qiu Limin¡¢Associate Prof. Sun Daming¡¢Associate Prof. Zhang Xiaobin¡¢Associate Prof. Tang Ke¡¢Dr. Xu Xiangguo and related students participated in the seminar, which was chaired by Associate Prof. Sun Daming. During the presentation, teachers and students had an in-depth discussion with Prof. Carman. After the report, Prof. Carman and Prof. Derek visited the laboratory of the Energy Engineering Department, and spoke highly of the current research work.
Prof. Carman’s research interestsinclude the modeling, fabrication, and testing of active (smart) material systems and the development of devices for various applications. He has published more than 250 research papers and has secured in excess of USD53M research grants at UCLA. He iscurrently Professor and Director of the Active Materials Laboratory in the MAE Department at UCLA, Co-Executive Director and Member of Board of Directors of the Center for Advanced Surgical and Interventional Technologyin the Department of Surgery at UCLA, and Member of the California NanoSystems Institute.Recently he won a huge grant of USD35M from NSF to establishthe NSF Engineering Research Center for Translational Applications of Nanoscale Multiferroic Systems.
